The Payroll Certification program was developed by a Certified Public Accounting (CPA) firm to educate and certify the firm's professional payroll personnel to assist the firm's degreed accountants and CPAs in performing public payroll services. Over the past 10 years, the Payroll Certification program has been used by hundreds of bookkeeping, accounting, and payroll firms to educate and certify payroll personnel.

Objective
The objective of the Payroll Certification is to assure small business and nonprofit owners and employees that the professional bookkeeper possesses the knowledge and skills to provide cost-effective bookkeeping services.

The primary objective of professional payroll processors seeking payroll "certification" is to make themselves more marketable. It is a form of assurance to prospective clients. Professionals use their certification to differentiate themselves from other professional payroll processors.

The Payroll Certification program includes an educational component comprised of the UBA Payroll Tax Guide. This Guidebook is for payroll processors who want to learn or enhance their knowledge of payroll processing and return preparation and serves as the educational foundation for our Payroll Certification examination. The Guidebook can also be used as reference tool for payroll personnel.

To earn the Payroll Certification, individuals must complete the following steps:

  1. Study the UBA Payroll Tax Guide for the Payroll Certification exam below.
  2. Upon completion of the Guide, request access to the UBA Payroll Tax Exam.
  3. Successfully complete and pass the exam.

Individuals who meet these requirements receive our Payroll Certificate.

Payroll Certification Exam
UBA's Payroll Tax Exam is used to test the payroll processor's payroll competency. The exam consists of 100 multiple choice questions. As you complete the self-study Guide you may request access to the exam via email or telephone. You have 24 hours to take and submit the exam for grading and the exam is "open-book". You must receive an 80% in order to pass the exam. Test results are made available to you within 24 hours. If necessary, you must wait one full week to retake the exam. However, there is no additional fee to retake the exam. Exams are accessed upon request. To request an exam, please email exams@utahba.org or call 866-444-9989.
